Why?
Do you ever think about why you do what you do? I was listening to “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer the other day (HIGHLY recommend) and he shared a quote from Tim Keller… I can’t remember exactly what he said (all the more reason for you to check out the book π but it was something about people who meditate being really cool people with examined lives and an understanding of their own motives.
So, me being me… I started to examine my entire to do list, my calendar and my day. I was able to break my “why” into 6 main categories for why I do things I eventually regret and 9 main categories of why I do things that I believe are worthwhile.
Your list will likely look different, but I’ll share mine as a guide. If you take time to consider the reasons you do what you do and find it helpful, like I did, feel free to share your experience in the comments.
Main reasons I do things I eventually regret…
- C – Control Attempt
- F – Fear
- I – Impatience
- L – Laziness
- P – Pride
- S – Selfishness
Main reasons I do things I believe are worthwhile in the long runβ¦
- B β Biblical
- C β Convenient
- E β Enjoy it
- F β Family likes it
- H – Health
- L β Loving
- M β Marriage growth
- P β Personal growth
- R β Resourceful
- S β Safety
Full disclosure, some of the lower list items (Namely C, E, and F) occasionally end up in the other category. Complex, I know, but totally gets me thinking.
Whatever you discover, taking time to examine your life will likely end up on the worthwhile list.
